2009 SPIBL – A review of their 2009 SPIBL performance.

Outlook – A prognostication of their future performance.

Without further delay, a review of the top 10 picks in the 2009 SPIBL draft:

1. Ricky Nolasco, P [ANA]

2009 SPIBL: Nolasco was a 15 game winner for Anaheim, compiling 197 K’s in his rookie season.  Grade: A

Outlook: Despite an uneven MLB performance in ’09 his stock is still high and is a prime rebound candidate.  Grade: B

2. Alexei Ramirez, IF [OAK]

2009 SPIBL: Oakland’s new shortstop was solid, yet unspectalular with a .257 BA while struggling to get on base with a .290 OBP. Grade: C+

Outlook: ’09 MLB performance shows a drop in power but a more patient hitter that should provide a decent clutch rating.  Grade: C+

3. Armando Galarraga, P [PHI]

2009 SPIBL: Armando struggled in his rookie debut, allowing 40 home runs in his 179 innings of work. His record of 9-13 and ERA of 5.23 was a disappointment. Grade: D

Outlook: After getting shelled as a starter, he was demoted to the bullpen late in the ’09 MLB season.  He saw his HR/9 rate increase and is K/9 decrease. Grade: D

4. John Lannan, P [OAK]

2009 SPIBL: The southpaw flashed his stuff during a stretch in July-August, allowing only 10 runs in 44+ innings.  Grade: B-

Outlook: His ’09 numbers look very similar to his ’08 but with a drop in K/9.  A solid middle/back of rotation choice. Grade: B

5. Mike Aviles, SS [SEA]

2009 SPIBL: Seattle’s new shortstop ends his rookie year with a .295 BA and .318 OBP.  With only 14 walks for the season, he wasn’t your prototypical leadoff hitter.  Grade: B+

Outlook: Tommy John surgery means Aviles will be on the shelf for a couple seasons before attempting a comeback.  Grade: D

6. Greg Smith, P [ATL]

2009 SPIBL: A nice season for the finesse lefty, going 12-10 with a 3.81 ERA for Atlanta.  Grade: B+

Outlook: After a trade to the Rockies it went downhill quickly. Greg failed to make an appearance in ’09, battling shoulder fatigue and struggling in the minors. Grade: D+

7. Tommy Hanson, P [SEA]

2009 SPIBL: Uncarded

Outlook: The top prospect made a fine MLB debut, raising his stock even higher. Grade: A

8. Pablo Sandoval, IF [DET]

2009 SPIBL: Pablo excelled on offense in a limited role, but did struggle on defense. Grade: B

Outlook: He looks to be ready for a full-time role at 3B, both defensively and offensively and is a threat to hit 30 HRs. Grade: A-

9. Trevor Cahill, P [SEA]

2009 SPIBL: Uncarded

Outlook: Ready to make his SPIBL debut in ’10. His high HR/9 and low K/9 rates could be worrisome for his rookie season, but his only 21 and has a bright future. Grade: B

10. Gregor Blanco, OF [MIL]

2009 SPIBL: Gregor had his struggles in ’09 with a .230 BA and .287 SLG. He covered a lot of ground defensively, but offensively was not much of a threat. Grade: C-

Outlook: Lost his starting role to McLouth and also struggled in the minors. Has Schafer to contend with in fighting for a position. Grade: D
