Player Of The Block

BLOCK NINE

Julian Tavarez, Oakland OaksAmerican League - Julian Tavarez, Oakland Oaks

For the first time in SPIBL Player Of The Block history, the award is going to a middle reliever!  And not even a typical quality middle reliever, but one that was seemingly washed up and just running out his career on a last place team.  Beating the odds, Julian Tavarez has made himself relevant again for the Oakland Oaks.  He has appeared in 11 of his team's last 14 games while posting a 3-0 record and saving two games.  In over 20 innings pitched, Tavarez surrendered just 12 hits, six walks, and a mere two runs.  His ERA over that stretch is a sparkling 0.87.  Just when you thought you had seen it all, Julian happens.

Honorable Mention:

Kyle Lohse, HOU - 2.57 ERA, 3-0, 1 CG, 21 IP, 12 HA, 2 BBA

Victor Martinez, Florida InvadersNational League -- Victor Martinez, Florida Invaders

Perennial all-star catcher for the Florida Invaders, Victor Martinez, got fired up in Block 9 and the result is the NL Player Of The Block award.  "Our team is better than we're playing," said Martinez recently.  "We haven't done much right this year, but we'll be all right.  The future looks good."  According to Victor's recent level of play, the future may be now.  While posting 21 hits and a terrific .389 batting average, Martinez was an extra base hit machine.  He crushed seven doubles and five homeruns.  He also drove in a block-best 18 runs and scored eight more.  Martinez also displayed great discipline in striking out just five times in his past 14 games.
