Thomson On His Way To The Big Apple By Stan Koczkodaj, New York Daily News July 18, 2005 -- The New York Flatirons and the Los Angeles Skyhawks have completed a trade, exchanging pitchers, as left-handed swingman/future starter Bruce Chen goes to L.A. in return for veteran right-handed starter John Thomson. Chen has indicated that he looks forward to pitching in the Skyhawk ballpark in what will likely be an expanded role this season and beyond. "Here in New York, I was the victim of a numbers situation. I was looking forward to getting a few more starting assignments after (David) Wells was traded, but the opportunity never came. I think I can help the Skyhawks in whatever role they give me, but I truly look forward to the chance to be a member of their starting rotation at some point. At the same time, I wish the guys in New York the best of luck in their division title chase. I enjoyed my time here despite my diminished role." Thomson was also positive about the trade: "I have mixed feelings about leaving the Skyhawks. My teammates are a terrific group of guys and I’ll miss them. However, as a professional ballplayer, I am very excited to be going to a team that is in the thick of a division title race. I am honored that New York has confidence in me to fill an important role in their starting rotation and am grateful to the owners and management in L.A. for providing this opportunity for me." Thomson had been rumored in many trade scenarios recently, with the lack of quality starters available. With a constant search for the missing piece for their starting rotation puzzle, it was only a matter of time before NY approached the Skyhawks. This was especially true after the Flatirons dealt David Wells, who had been a major disappointment during his stay with the Flatirons, but who has flourished after subsequent trades to the Anaheim Ants and the Chicago Blue Knights. |
