Final Trade Before Deadline

 Associated Press, 09/01/05

Seattle trades 1B Carlos Delgado to Anaheim for pitcher Jose Contreras.  For Seattle, the move was made to make room for rising star Chris Shelton and to clear over $11 million in salary cap space over the next three seasons.  Contreras will likely take Roger Clemens' spot in the rotation next year as Clemens’ contract expires and the end of the year.

Brad Fullmer and Mark Sweeney will split time in Seattle at first base for the balance of the season.

Internal sources in the Anaheim organization are said to be split on the trade.  It was thought that the Ants were in a clear rebuilding effort and the acquisition of Delgado, although still a premier slugger, will block the path of rising potential star Ryan Howard.  The backers of the trade are stating that they are pushing up the timetable on their rebuilding plan and would like to make a run at the playoffs now and next year.  Although adding 11 million to the salary cap, the organization insists that they still have enough cap flexibility to make future trades and free agent acquisitions.  A look at the Ants salary cap backs this statement up, showing them to still be 30 million under the cap in the coming years.

Carlos Delgado will be expected to mentor Ryan Howard and minor leaguer Kendry Morales for the future.  Tino Martinez and Jason Giambi will be free agents after this season and are not expected to return.  Veteran Jamie Moyer or rookie Brandon Claussen will take Contreras' spot in the rotation along with Jae Seo, who has been inactive all season.
