2016 SPIBL Season

2016 SPIBL All-Star Game

2015 SPIBL Postseason

Prospects Update, AL West

Los Angeles – Outlook appears bright for the future with solid young talent.

  • Jeff Baker - Has struggled with Colorado and at AAA.  Not good with Atkins and Ian Stewart playing the same position.
  • Chad Billingsley - Has performed well at AA in 12 starts.  Showing good control and power.  A great pick.
  • Joe Blanton - 1.64 WHIP through 10 starts in Oakland.  Not fooling anyone.  23 BB / 16 K
  • JD Closser - .566 OPS in 1st full season.  Struggling.
  • Bobby Crosby - Injury bug hit, but he’s back and ready to deal.
  • Cole Hamels - Looks like he’s still not back from injuries
  • Jeremy Hermida - 1.020 OPS at AA.  Lots of pop.  Think Shawn Green.  A great pick.
  • Chin-Hui Tsao - Shoulder surgery.
  • Chase Utley - In 1st full season is crushing RHP but can’t hit LHP

Oakland – Jackson, Niemann, Wainwright, and Willingham have the future looking rosy.

  • Ryan Anderson - 2 games, 2 games started, 2 IP.  What gives?
  • Freddy Guzman - Injured
  • Josh Hamilton - Drug problems.  A waste of talent.
  • Aaron Heilman - 1.15 WHIP through 13 games.  Needs to start more games.
  • Connor Jackson - 1.079 OPS at AAA.  A doubles-hitting machine.  Looking at September call-up.
  • John Maine - Having a solid year at AAA.  Good control pitcher.
  • Orber Moreno - Injury problems
  • Jeff Niemann - 10 BB in 20 IP not good.  Only 12 hits in 20 IP is a very good thing.  Stud material
  • Adam Wainwright - Has been brilliant at AAA.  Only 8 BB in 72 IP over 11 starts.
  • Josh Willingham - An incredible 1.201 OPS at AAA.  16 HR in 44 games.  Time to bring him up for good.

San Diego –  Some solid but not spectacular contributors here.

  • Kyle Davies - A strong 1st 3 starts in the bigs.  A solid pick.
  • JD Durbin - 4.68 ERA in 10 starts at AAA.  Needs to cut down on BB.
  • Edwin Encarnacion - .835 OPS at AAA.  Living up to the hype.
  • Justin Germano - Solid at AAA.  Good BB/K ratio over 10 starts.
  • Bobby Jenks - 12 saves in 23 games at AA. 30 K in 25 IP.
  • Kaz Matsui - Has terrible OBP.  Losing time to journeyman Miguel Cairo.
  • Luis Terrero - Crushing RHP.  Can’t hit LHP.  Needs to improve OBP.
  • Andy Van Hekken - Has struggled in the minors.  Clock is ticking.

San Francisco – Felix Pie is a gem surrounded by solid players.

  • Garrett Atkins - Off to a real good start in rookie campaign
  • Grant Balfour - Injured
  • Brian Bruney - 1.68 WHIP but has been a closer and a set-up man so far at Arizona.
  • Curtis Granderson - Has been solid but not spectacular at AAA.
  • Ben Hendrickson - A solid 10 starts at AAA…still to many baserunners.
  • Gerald Laird - Excelling at AAA with a .931 OPS.  Will he get a chance in the bigs?
  • Yadier Molina - Just like his brothers.  Good D and little hitting.
  • Felix Pie - A stud.  Does it all at AA.  A star in the making.  A great pick.
  • Andy Sisco - Has been brilliant out of the pen for KC.  A great pick.
  • Kyle Sleeth - Hurt?  Injured??
  • Nick Swisher - Slow-start in Oakland but a real good pick here.
  • Marcus Thames - Spotty playing time.  Looking for an opportunity.
  • Justin Verlander - 1.05 WHIP at high-A in 10 starts gets it done every time.
  • Jered Weaver - Finally signs with the Angels before the deadline.

Prospects Update, AL Central

Chicago – Need more guys like Choo for the future.

  • Shin-Soo Choo – .912 OPS at AAA.  Showing some pop to go with all-around game.  Ready for the show.  A great pick.

  • Jake Gautreau – .861 OPS at AAA.  Lots of power for a second baseman but OBP is poor.  A solid pick.

  • Andrew Good – Up and down between AAA and the bigs… still inconsistent.

  • James Loney – Needs to get back on track.  Only a .700 OPS at AA.

  • Terrmel Sledge – Out 5-7 months with a hamstring injury.  Sophomore jinx.

Houston –  A bunch of talented young guys who are underachieving right now

  • Taylor Bucholz – A so-so 7 starts at AAA.  6 HR in 30 IP.

  • John Buck – Bad start in his sophomore year.  Luckily he’s in KC so he can work out of it.

  • Chris Burke – Sent back to the minors for playing time.  Waiting on Biggio to retire it looks like.  Still a solid pick.

  • Jose Castillo – Injury-plagued sophomore year so far.

  • Eric Duncan – .659 OPS at AAA.  More is expected from him.  A good pick.

  • Adrian Gonzalez – Up and down between AAA and the bigs.  Needs an extended period up in the show to finally see what he can do.  Texas should trade him.  A good pick.

  • Edwin Jackson – The luster has definitely dimmed on this prospect.  Awful #’s after 7 AAA starts.

  • Ryan Langerhans – Has shown some power but not much else in an OF utility role.

  • Jose Lopez – Back in the minors….biding his time.

  • Lastings Milledge – .717 OPS at high A but is heating up.  A great pick.

  • Ramon Nivar – Ho hum….buried in the minors.

  • John Van Benschoten – Out for the season.

Milwaukee –  Need more guys in the minors like Ramirez.  2nd year guys are underachieving.

  • Scott Hairston – A non-factor in his 2nd year.

  • Noah Lowry – 1.61 WHIP in 8 starts.  10 HR in only 44 IP.  This is troublesome considering he pitches in pitcher-friendly SBC Park.

  • Hanley Ramirez – Highly touted prospect is off to a good start.  Is the OF in his future?  A good pick.

  • Chad Tracy – Position switch this year to 1st base.  Good SLG but terrible OBP.

  • Ryan Vogelsong – 2.02 WHIP in 9 games.  Time is running out.  He’s out of options at Pittsburgh.

Texas–  Nothing in the minors.  Could replenish the farm system.

  • Tim Drew – Has given up 48 hits in 34 IP in 7 starts at AAA.  Needs to turn it around.

  • Jimmy Gobble – Struggling at AAA in 6 starts.

  • Charles Thomas – May be having the worst year of any pro so far.  An unbelievable .370 OPS so far.  Really needs to do something (anything) to stay in the bigs.

Prospects Update, AL East

Boston – Outlook looks bright for the future with these young players contributing now.

  • Denny Bautista - 1.49 WHIP in 7 starts.  Has nasty stuff.  Looks like Pedro in one outing then looks like Pedro pitching against the Yankees in the next.  A great pick.
  • Gustavo Chacin- 1.33 WHIP in 9 starts.  This kid just keeps getting it done for the last 2 years.  A great pick.
  • Jason Dubois - .870 OPS in platoon role.  .571 slugging percentage.  Looks promising.
  • Matt Holiday- Having solid follow-up to rookie year.
  • Tad Iguchi - 30-year old Japanese import having a real nice “rookie” year.  A great pickup.
  • Adam Laroche - .812 OPS with Braves.  Solid but not spectacular so far.
  • Nook Logan - Having a tremendous year in Detroit.
  • Seth McClung - 1.90 WHIP in 13 IP.  Lots of hits and walks given up so far.

Cleveland –  More influx of youth and prospects will improve outlook

  • Jorge de la Rosa - 2.07 WHIP in 13 IP.  Shaky beginning.
  • J.J.- .438 OPS to begin the season.  Needs to hit at least a little bit here.
  • Landon Powell - Injured
  • Mark Rogers - In A-ball has 35 K in 26 IP but 19 walks.  A live arm.

New York –  Bush and Madson are key pitchers for the future.

  • Greg Aquino - Injury problems
  • David Bush - 1.20 WHIP in 8 starts.  Off to another good year.  A great pick.
  • Corey Hart - .641 OPS at AAA.  Terrible OBP.
  • Joe Horgan - Splitting time at AAA and the Nationals.  Has given up 19 hits in 6 IP.  That is a lot.
  • Bucky Jacobsen - Injury problems
  • Dan Johnson - Tearing it up again at AAA.  Deserves a chance soon.  Nothing left to prove at AAA.
  • Ryan Madson - 1.10 WHIP so far.  A keeper
  • Jorge Piedra - Claim to fame this year is steroid suspension.
  • Michael Restovich - Trade to Pittsburgh opens up playing time possibilities.
  • Terry Tiffee - .595 OPS in limited playing time with the Twins.  Just called up to bigs for 2nd time this year.

Pittsburgh –  Injuries to Burnett and Miller dim outlook somewhat.

  • Sean Burnett- Out for the season with arm surgery.
  • Brett Evert- Goes from AAA to high-A.
  • Franlin Gutierrez- Highly touted prospect is at AA with a .703 OPS.  A good pick.
  • Aaron Miles- Having a real solid year at Colorado.  Established at the pro level now.
  • Greg Miller- Still recovering from surgery.
  • Jason Stokes- Still at AAA flexing power.  Ready for an opportunity.
