In a close game the blistering-hot New York (AL) Angels got by the reeling
Florida Frenzy in 10 innings by the score of 10 to 8.

The game was deadlocked at 7 after nine full innings.  New York (AL) was
victorious in the 10th inning.  Eli Marrero kicked off the action when he
laced a one-base hit.  Fernando Vina came to the plate and drew a walk.
Magglio Ordonez then laced a base-hit, and an error was also committed,
plating two runs.  Cristian Guzman was up next and he would hit into a
fielders choice scoring the final run of the inning.  New York (AL) banged
out 14 on the night.  

Billy Wagner(3-2) got credit for the victory, pitching 2 innings and allowing
2 runs. Wagner got help from Brendan Donnelly who was credited with his 6th
save.  Jeff Fassero(8-8) ended up with the loss in relief.  He was knocked
around pretty good, giving up 3 runs in 2 innings.

Meadows(2-4) needed.  Cleveland totaled 7 on the afternoon.  

Meadows got help from Kelly Wunsch who earned his 2nd save.  Tanyon
Sturtze(3-5) was charged with the loss.  He gave up 4 hits and 4 walks in 4
and 2/3 innings.

Aquilino Lopez(3-5) picked up the victory, allowing no runs in 2 innings.
Aaron Cook(0-1) was the losing pitcher in relief.  He pitched 4 and 2/3

separated the combatants at game's end.  The Los Angeles Skyhawks won by the
slimmest of margins, 3 to 2.

Los Angeles scored 2 runs in the bottom of the 2nd inning with the help of 3
hits.  The key at-bat was by Randall Simon who electrified Dodger Stadium
when he cleared the fences for a two-run home run (his 14th of the season).
San Diego made it exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to push the
needed runs across.  

The victory was credited to Josh Fogg(6-10) who went 7 and 2/3 innings,
allowing 1 run. Joe Borowski gained credit for his 35th save.  Gary
Knotts(1-5) was hit with the loss.

innings allowing 7 hits and 2 walks seeing his ERA drop from 5.14 to 4.94.

The loss was charged to Roger Clemens(16-7).  He surrendered 2 runs and 4 hits

In a lop-sided win the New York (NL) Trolley Dodgers put 5 runs on the

count.

New York (NL) took the lead for good in the bottom of the 2nd inning when they
tallied 2 runs on 3 hits.  The big moment was provided by Miguel Olivo who
made the crowd come alive when he blasted a two-run home run (his 8th of the
season).  New York (NL) finished with 12 hits in the victory.  

The win was credited to Victor Zambrano(7-6) who went 7 innings allowing 5
runs. Randy Johnson(9-6) suffered the loss.  He gave up 6 runs in 4 innings
of work.  

Left fielder Brian Giles smacked 2 homeruns and had 5 RBI but his offense was
not enough to carry Baltimore to victory.

Soriano recorded the save, his 13th.  Jose Jimenez(1-11) was charged with the

3 hits.  After an out was recorded, Bobby Higginson got things going when he
laced a base-hit.  Ramon Santiago stepped into the batter's box and he
smacked a single.  One out later, Larry Bigbie stepped in and he was walked
intentionally to load the bases.  Blaine Neal then bounced one in the dirt
for a wild pitch plating a run.  Sanchez stepped into the box and lined a
one-base hit as another two runners scored.  Philadelphia finished with 12
hits in the victory.  

Scott Eyre(1-0) picked up the victory, allowing no runs in 2/3 of an inning.

When asked about his strikeout total for the game, Hendrickson offered, 'The
fan's really got into it.  It is fun to see them tally up the strikeout
totals up there in the stands.  Fortunately, I kept them busy this afternoon
- of course, it would be all for naught without the 'W'.'

8th inning.  Chicago (NL) had 7 hits for the night while St. Louis had 3.

Matt Mantei earned his 34th save.  The losing pitcher was John Burkett(7-14).
He pitched 5 innings allowing only 3 hits and no walks.

Chicago (NL)'s manager was asked about the performance of Prior, 'He had his
good stuff out there tonight.  The fans really get into it when the
strikeouts start mounting up - and that seems to give him even more
adrenalin.'

The victory went to Beckett(9-5) who went the distance allowing 2 runs. The
losing pitcher was Jim Parque(0-1).  He served up 3 gopher balls in 2 and 2/3

Steve Trachsel pitched a complete game as the San Francisco Sea Lions
destroyed the pitiful San Diego Black Sox by a score of 17 to 3 at Qualcomm
Stadium.

Placido Polanco was unconscious out there.  While San Diego pitching was
serving softballs up there for him to hit, the San Diego fans were serving up
some hardball barbs when he entered the batter's box.  But he just used it as
fuel for the fire.  He doubled knocking in a run in the 1st inning, slapped a
one-base hit which plated a run in the 2nd inning and smashed a two-run homer
(his 13th of the season) in the 5th inning.  San Francisco bats were very
productive in the 7th inning which saw them plate 4 runs on 4 hits and the
9th inning when they had 7 runs on 7 hits.  San Francisco had a total of 18
hits for the game.

Spencer had a big day with his bat.  He slapped a single in the 2nd inning,
clubbed a three-run home run in the 4th inning and cracked a two-run shot
(his 11th of the season) in the 6th inning.  San Francisco bats were hot in
the 3rd inning with 7 runs on 6 hits and the 4th inning which saw them plate
4 runs on 4 hits.  San Francisco had 17 hits overall, while San Diego had 12.

Andrew Good(4-6) got the win allowing 5 runs in 5 and 2/3 innings. Good got
help from Arthur Rhodes who earned his 8th save.  John Patterson(1-4) was the
loser.  He gave up 6 runs in 2 and 2/3 innings of work.

San Diego claimed the early lead in the first inning when they scored 4 runs
on 3 hits.  That was all the offense they were to need.  San Francisco made
it exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to push the needed runs across.

Ron Villone(6-7) picked up the victory, allowing 3 runs in 5 innings. Villone
got help from Aquilino Lopez who was credited with his 31st save.  Ismael
Valdes(2-17) was tagged with the loss.

runs on 4 hits.  The critical plate appearance was by Bobby Abreu who
deflated the crowd as he clubbed a three-run home run (his 25th of the
season).  Oakland finished with 19 hits while San Diego ended up with 12.

Juan Rincon(9-4) was the winner allowing no runs in 1 inning. Ryan Madson
gained credit for his 2nd save.  Kevin Gryboski(5-3) took the loss in relief.
He pitched 1 and 1/3 innings giving up 1 hit and 3 walks.

held San Diego to 1 run.

Oakland took the lead for good in the 4th inning when they tallied 4 runs on 4
hits.  The key offensive moment was provided by Tony Clark who silenced
Qualcomm Stadium as he smashed a two-run homer (his 13th of the season).
Oakland finished with 11 hits while San Diego ended up with 6.  

Wayne Franklin(0-7) was tagged with the loss.  He was touched for 10 hits and
4 walks in 6 and 1/3 innings.

utilizing 2 base hits.  New York (AL) out-hit Cleveland for the game, 11 hits
to 6.  

The victory went to Russ Ortiz(16-6) who went 5 and 1/3 innings, allowing 1
run. Billy Wagner recorded his 57th save.  Jorge Sosa(0-1) took the loss.

season) in the 5th inning.  Billy Wagner was great in relief and recorded his
58th save.  

The win went to David Wells(21-1) who allowed 4 runs in 6 innings. Mickey
Callaway(1-1) was the loser.  He pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up 5 hits

Cleveland jumped on top of Florida in the 5th inning as they scored 2 runs on
2 base hits.  The crucial at-bat was provided by Jose Valentin who came
through for the home fans when he doubled bringing in two baserunners.
Cleveland finished with 10 hits in the victory.  

Brian Meadows(3-4) got credit for the victory, pitching 6 and 1/3 innings and
allowing 3 runs. Meadows got help from Kelly Wunsch who was credited with his
3rd save.  Kurt Ainsworth(3-5) took the loss.  He allowed a few too many
baserunners giving up 8 hits and 4 walks in 5 innings.

Estes(5-3) pitched a fine game.  He allowed 9 hits and 2 walks in 9 innings
reducing his ERA from 4.98 to 4.72.  Florida rapped out 13 hits for the
night.  

Jorge Sosa(0-2) was tagged with the loss.  He allowed 5 runs and 11 hits in 8
and 2/3 innings.

Jim Brower came through with a solid 5 innings and Orlando Cabrera had 3 base
hits at US Cellular Field where the phenomenal Seattle Pilots beat the
Chicago (AL) Cardinals 4 to 3.

Seattle scored the deciding run in the 9th inning.  Geoff Blum singled.  Two
outs later Cabrera came to the plate and delivered a single scoring the run.
Seattle rapped out 9 hits for the night.  

Steve Reed(1-1) allowed no runs in 1 and 1/3 innings, and picked up the
victory. Eric Gagne gained credit for his 38th save.  John Halama(4-2) was
hit with the loss in relief.

In a thriller the spectacular Seattle Pilots staged a dramatic comeback then
held on to win over the Chicago (AL) Cardinals by a score of 4 to 3 at US
Cellular Field.

Seattle came up with the deciding runs in the 9th inning with 2 runs.  Carlos
Delgado kicked off the action when he drew a walk.  After an out was
recorded, Roberts was safe on a stolen base.  Seattle continued their
aggressive style with another stolen base.  Richard Hidalgo came up and he
doubled driving in a run.  Bret Boone stepped into the box and was walked
intentionally.  Seattle got their 2nd stolen base of the inning.  Geoff Blum
stepped up next and he would hit into a fielders choice scoring the final run
of the inning.  Chicago (AL) was retired without difficulty in the bottom of
the 9th.  

The victory was credited to Paul Quantrill(8-2) who went 2/3 of an inning,
allowing no runs. Quantrill was helped out by Eric Gagne who recorded his
39th save.  Keith Foulke(3-4) was the losing pitcher in relief.  

Foulke was feeling apologetic in the locker room, 'I sure let that one get
away.  What a miserable feeling to let the guys down; and our fans.  One
minute things are looking great, then. BOOM, it's over with! I just hope I
get a chance to redeem myself real soon!'

season) in the 9th inning.  Baltimore ended up with 18 hits for the game
while Boston had 9.  

Kerry Wood(17-6) got credit for the victory, pitching 5 innings and allowing 3
runs. Claudio Vargas(6-9) suffered the loss.  He was unable to control the
Baltimore offense and allowed 11 hits and 3 walks in 6 and 1/3 innings.

thrilled the crowd when he tripled bringing in two baserunners.  Both teams
finished the game with 9 hits.  

Kerry Ligtenberg(2-5) got the win allowing 1 run in 1 and 2/3 innings. Jason
Middlebrook earned his 1st save.  Kyle Farnsworth(3-2) was the losing pitcher
in relief.

sparkplug when he stroked a single.  After another out, Frank Thomas stepped
in and he smashed a two-run homer (his 28th of the season).  Boston managed 7
in their victory.  

Luis Vizcaino(3-3) picked up the victory, allowing no runs in 1 and 2/3
innings. Jesus Colome was credited with his 5th save.  The losing pitcher was
Jaret Wright(2-3) in relief.

Varitek had a good evening at the plate.  He lifted one out of the park for a
two run home run in the 2nd inning, cracked a solo homerun (his 33rd of the
season) in the 4th inning and lined a single plating a run in the 5th inning.
Philadelphia had 13 hits for the game and Boston had 8.  

The winning pitcher was Sidney Ponson(19-5) who allowed 5 runs in 6 and 2/3
innings. Ponson got relief help from Eddie Guardado who gained credit for his
19th save.  Nick Bierbrodt(0-2) took the loss.  He was not very effective,
surrendering 7 runs in 4 and 2/3 innings.  

'I just wanted to give my team a chance to win.' said Ponson, 'I got burned on
a couple of pitches. But we won the game, and that's all that matters.'

Park as the Boston Bees beat the Philadelphia Phanatics by the count of 4 to

Vargas(7-9) was virtually untouchable.  He allowed only 3 hits and no walks in
9 innings seeing his ERA drop from 4.72 to 4.40.  Boston managed only 4 on
the night.  

Hideo Nomo(18-10) suffered the loss.  He allowed just 1 hit and 2 walks in 5
innings.  Philadelphia's manager lamented, 'Vargas was really aggressive
today.  He kept coming after our hitters.  Heck, why not. he kept sitting our
guys down one after another - like so many bowling pins!'

Toronto out-hit St. Louis 11 to 5.  

John Burkett(7-15) suffered the loss. He surrendered 6 hits and 1 walk in 5
innings.

Glavine(13-10) gave St. Louis a solid outing.  He didn't give up much, just 1
hit and 3 walks in 6 and 1/3 innings.  The left-handed Glavine lost his
no-hit bid when Coco Crisp singled with one out in the 6th inning.  Glavine
got help from Armando Benitez who pitched a perfect ninth and was credited
with his 27th save.  

Mike Maroth(8-17) ended up with the loss.  He pitched 5 innings and
surrendered 2 hits and 2 walks.
