Matt Kemp capped off an impressive 2012 season by winning the AL MVP award
in near unanimous fashion. Kemp received 24 of 26 first place votes. Oddly
enough, only one voter in the Midwest left Kemp off his ballot entirely.
Detroit's Hunter Pence won the NL MVP award by capturing 16 first place
votes, 4 times as many as teammate Albert Pujols. Despite 4 first place
votes, Pujols was only named on 5 other ballots, and finished a distant 4th
in voting.
The San Francisco Sea Lions dominated AL Cy Young voting. Jered Weaver,
Justin Verlander, and David Price finished 1-2-3 on the ballot. Weaver's 11
first place votes led, but Verlander was right behind with 10. Weaver
outdistanced Verlander on second place votes, though, and that was the
determining factor.
22 game winner James Shields ran away with the NL Cy Young award. Shields
received 14 first place votes (6 people left him off their ballot
altogether) in winning. Teammate R.A. Dickey finished second.
While he finished a disappointing 4th in Cy Young voting, Chicago's Michael
Pineda picked up a nice parting gift in winning the AL Rookie of the Year.
Pineda's 19 first place votes easily won in a landslide.
The NL Rookie of the Year voting was super close, and came down to the final
ballot. Colorado's Darwin Barney wins by a slim two point margin over Mark
Trumbo. Barney was only named on 16 ballots, but he got first place votes
on 11 of them. Meanwhile, Trumbo had 14 second place votes, but only 3
first place.
Congrats to all.
