Notes Around The League: Anaheim Ants By Anaheim Bulletin Staff (9/3/2005) * Anaheim pulls off it’s 7th and 8th trades of the year sending Jose Contreras to Seattle for Carlos Delgado and sending Tino Martinez to Seattle for a 4th round pick next year. * The Management team was split on the acquisition of Delgado with Ryan Howard ready to take over next year. Howard is reportedly upset at the trade and may seek a trade to another team. * The trade of Contreras opens up a spot for Brandon Claussen in the rotation for next year. * The Ants rank near the bottom tier in runs scored but rank close to the top in team ERA. With the pitching performing so well, it is allowing the team to bring along 1st round draft pick, Matt Cain, slowly. The 21-year old is having a dynamic year in the minors. * It was becoming apparent that Adam Kennedy would be the next veteran to be shown the door in the youth movement but the Delgado signing may have altered that. Although young Chase Utley appears ready to take over at second base, many in the organization feel a sense of loyalty to the longtime Anaheim player. Kennedy has little to say on the future. * Jason Giambi’s days as an Ant are winding down. The club has said as much, inferring they will not be re-signing Giambi. The swirling steroid rumors are seen as a negative influence on the team with so many young players. Giambi has struggled in the last few years and appears as though he has lost about 45 pounds off of his frame. * Dan Haren made his debut a dandy. He went 7 innings striking out 5 and walking 0 in winning his debut. Haren is expected to take a starting spot next year. |
