Alan Lecher, Chicago Sun-Times (08/19/05) * The Blue Knights have had the league’s top record since May 18th when they had the same record as the Philadelphia Phanatics (26-14), a span of 64 games. * Thus far, the June 27th trade with Anaheim involving 12 players can be deemed a success in the windy city. David Wells has become the #3 starter and in five games is 1-1 with a 4.04 ERA and has kept his team in games. Mike Lamb has appeared in 15 games and is batting .340 (17 for 50) with two homeruns. * On August 13th, Johan Santana earned his third shutout of the year, holding the high-powered Pittsburgh Conspiracy offense to just one hit. He did not allow a walk and struck out eight to improve his overall record to 15-6. * Santana eclipsed the 200-strikeout mark for the first time in his career and continues to lead the American League. * Right-handed outfielder Lew Ford is batting a paltry .205 versus left-handed pitching this season. * Jay Payton is batting .083 versus righties this season (3 for 36), but has not struck out against a lefty in 82 at bats. * The Blue Knights have five players with more walks than strikeouts (min 100 AB): Todd Helton, Jerry Hairston Jr., Frank Thomas, Ford, and Payton. * Augie Ojeda has six pinch hits this season, including two homeruns. * Julio Lugo is on pace for 57 doubles this season. * Six different Chicago pitchers have recorded saves this season: Juan Rincon (20), Tim Worrell (3), Juan Cruz (2), Mike Timlin (1), Dan Miceli (1), and John Halama (1). |
