LANDRUM TO BLAME IN ST. LOUIS

by Joe Strauss, St. Louis Post-Dispatch

June 13, 2005 -- In the throes of a season long team-wide batting slump, St. Louis owner/GM Jim Sorochen has decided to fire long-time batting coach Tito Landrum.  St. Louis insiders were expecting the move as the Red Birds, currently in fourth place and eight games behind the NL Central-leading Detroit Outlaws, have gotten off to a lackluster 25-32 start this year.  St. Louis is hitting only .236 as a team and is only averaging 3.7 runs per game.

Speculation is that the Red Birds are reaching out to Mark McGwire to come on board.

Tito Landrum was a career .249 hitter in nine major league seasons and was a member of four World Series teams in the 1980s.  His icon status in the St. Louis community could not protect his job this season.

Will Mark McGwire answer the call as the new hitting coach of the St. Louis Red Birds?
