FIRST PLACE PHILLY STRIKES A DEAL FOR AN ACE by Todd Zolecki, Philadelphia Inquirer July 12, 2005 -- The Philadelphia Phanatics, looking to make a second-half run in the tight NL east race, have a completed a trade with Florida, sending young shortstop Clint Barmes and their 2006 2nd round draft pick in return for struggling ace righthander Javier Vazquez. Philly management conceded that Barmes was a great young talent, but was stuck playing behind a highly talented Phanatic infield comprised of Luis Castillo, Carlos Guillen, and Aramis Ramirez. "With a chance to add an ace like Vazquez to our rotation, we did not hesitate to package Barmes with a draft pick," said Philly GM Mike Orenstein.
