CAIN PITCHES
FIRST NO-HITTER IN ANTS HISTORY!
July
17, 2007 - The Anaheim Ants came close to getting a no-hitter this week when
Chris Young went 8 2/3 of no-hit ball against visiting Chicago, before losing
the no-hitter and the game on back to back home runs. Matt Cain decided to get
in on the action.
Cain
throws a no-hitter against the visiting Texas Missions, winning the game 8-2.
Cain walked five and struck out 7 and both runs were unearned. Texas actually
led this game for a brief time in the 4th inning. The Ants had taken a 1-0 lead
in the 3rd. After one out in the 4th, Morneau walked for Texas. Gary Matthews
then hit a ball into the right-center gap that gold-glover Andruw Jones ran down
only to see the ball drop out of his glove for a 3-base error, tying the game at
1. The next batter, Miguel Olivo, then grounded out to first base, Matthews
scoring to make it 2-1. Cain didn't settle down as he walked the next two
hitters before getting out of the inning. That would be the last time Texas
threatened as Cain retired 15 of the next 17 hitters while walking two more. It
was Cain's 14th win against three losses.

History was
made in Anaheim as Matt Cain(14-3) tossed a no-hitter and the
Anaheim Ants defeated the hapless Texas Missions by the score of 8 to
2.
Cain was
obviously at the top of his game as he set the Texas batters down
like so many dominoes. He walked 5 Texas batters. The Anaheim players and
coaches started to leave Cain alone with his thoughts after the game reached
the 7th inning. By the time the 9th inning rolled around, you could hear a
pin drop every time he went to his wind-up - and an explosion after every
out. Anaheim managed 10 in their victory.
Jason
Marquis(3-11) took the loss. He was not very effective, surrendering 6
runs in 5 and 1/3 innings. It took a while to pry Cain way from his
teammates as they all wanted to show their appreciation and joy. Finally,
however, Mike Scioscia got to offer his own congratulations with a big bear
hug and the comment, 'That was one of the best pitched games I have seen in
all my years in baseball - Cain was masterful out there tonight!'
